Here is a cool video shot on the Deschutes River.  This will start getting you amped for the fall runs this year already.  Even if Missouri River trout are sometimes as large as Deschutes steelhead, there is something about hooking steelhead on the swing that is different.  I am not sure if it's the early morning takes, the traditional flies, the long fly rod, or the power from running from the Pacific...but it is in a whole different class of fly fishing and it is a worthwhile adventure.

Cornfed and I fished Craig down on Sunday and first fish we saw river right after the bridge was a big Golden Ghost!  Didn't eat.  Gave us the Permit-y style cold shoulder.  I haven't heard much word yet because of all the cold weather on the Carpin' until last night.  Cornfed and his dad (Doc) fished the lower river and as I was headed to the upper river got a message with first Carp on the fly in any of our boats for the year.  There is a buckle to be won on August 14th this year.  Who's going to be King this summer?  Doc's got a head start.

Criminal charges, hiding the truth, larger than the Alaska oil spill, and jeopardizing the recreation industry are all accusations in the news right now regarding the oil spill in the Gulf.  At this point, we just need the spill to stop.

Here is an idea for a tippet holder. Depending on the size of the Snapper Pin. You can throw on about 4 RIO spools on a 2" pin. They have different size pins and shapes so I guess that they could fit whatever, Maxima, SA, WireBite, Shock Tippet or Salt lines. Some proper uses on the Snapper Pin Tippet Holder. You can have it snapped to your boat bag and say you want to get out and wade down stream a bit....... Take it off and snap it to your belt loop so you have it with you wading around. If you have a Shark Tooth tippet cutter on one of your spools it can reach all of them. For me it works pretty good for a boat bag organizer becuase I have tippet on my lanyard and then 10 different spools scattered in 10 different pockets.

Here is a link to the latest news on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The saltwater fishing industry in Florida is in jeopardy.  We will try to keep everyone updated on the status of this issue, however, it doesn't look good right now.  Here is the latest news via a memoradum posted by the Governer of Florida.  Memorandum from Governer Charlie Christ here.

The Dearborn peaked out yesterday at 707 CFS and is now coming down and is in the mid-500's and depending on weather may be fishable this weekend.  Yesterday Cornfed and some of the other fly shop guys were up there and passed the Dearborn.

A couple of ways to use this water to your advantage.  Fish sit on the mudlines in the currents from these tributaries to the Missouri.  Where Prickley Pear comes in you can see very clearly the current line... nymphing that mud line made from the currents is extremely effective.  Same on the Dearborn.  With water levels fluctuating this time of year... be creative and step outside the box, and try some things you haven't tried before.

The Belt Creek is not floatable due to log jams.  FWP is not permitting floaters due to trees down in the canyon, and there will be no way to get them out until flows recede.

"I really wish we had more time to fish," is the thought that went through my mind on an annoyingly repetitive basis throughout my trip in Puerto Rico.  My family who lives there constantly talked about how their are tons of Tarpon all over the island and no fly fisherman are ever around especially not outside of San Juan where they get a few anglers each year.  Eating dinner we would see Tarpon swarming waiting for guests to hand off extra chicken and fish, and in the marinas the Tarpon fins were rolling as we came to dock.  I need to go back, we need to get some hard core anglers and check it out.  It's not like I was a seeing a few baby tarpon in the mangroves... these were like 40-100lb fish just laying around chillin' out.  This video is of an island off of Puerto Rico that my family was telling me has a lot of Tarpon on a lagoon at the end of the point.  I thought I would share it so you can see how nice it would be to spend some days on the water in this atmosphere.  Looks like paradise to me.
