Ode to the Double Bunny
Sam Wike
Back in 2007 Paul, Erik, Broady, Ben and a few of the guys trying to pull off this fly shop in a farm store thing were contributing to the newsletter which we created with very few connections to the fly fishing industry.  Names like Gary LaFontaine, Rene Harrop, Kelly Galloup... just to name a very few were about the same to us as MJ, Shaq, Jerry Rice, and Kirby Puckett.  For Paul... that guy was Scott Sanchez.  I can't tell you how many awful looking double bunnies we have tied with super glue until we finally figured out that the Tear Mender product in the tarp section of the farm department worked much better, but we have used the fly for just about all species we've fished for and Scott Sanchez is to thank.  Here is page 2 of our 2007 newsletter (original typos, Paul originals, and all) with Paul's original... and poetic outreach to his high school hero...

The poem reads…

ODE TO THE DOUBLE BUNNY

Ode to the double bunny,
Oh, it looks so funny,
To the trout, it tastes oh so yummy,
When it in their mouth, it’s not so funny,
Zonker strips back to back,
This fly is like wild trout crack,
A size 4 hook and dumbbell eyes,
The only trout you’ll see are of monstrous size,
Fish it in the morning or fish it at night,
Trout bums know the double bunnies might,
So stock up on flies and load the boat,
And tie on a double bunny for your next river float!

So you can imagine how excited Paul was last week, when during a tour and line showing at the new and beautiful Simms facility in 4-corners near Bozeman, MT to meet Mr. Scott Sanchez, as he was there doing the same thing as us.  Scott works for Jack Dennis Fly Shop near Jackson Hole as the fly shop manager for Jack Dennis Outdoors.  After Paul could soak up all he could from our friends at Headhunters Fly Shop and our new friends from Jack Dennis Fly Shop, we had the chance to sit down and have a drink with one of the greats.  Look at Paul’s smile…

That is a great story and I hope we will see some more of Paul's poems.
