Missouri River with Finfetchers

What to Expect with a Finfetcher on the Missouri

The Missouri River the best tail water in the west! Aquatic insect life thrives in the spring creek like habitat of the Missouri which makes the 4000 plus fish per mile fat and strong.   There are bugs hatching every day of the year on the MO.  The main hatches consist of Midges, Baetis, PMDs, Caddis, and Tricos.  Not to mention great hopper fishing mid to late summer.  Trout sipping dries in flat water keeps anglers dreaming about the “Mo” and its match the hatch style.   Missouri Rainbows average 14-20 inches and feed in “pods” during hatches. Rainbows are not the only attraction on the MO.  Brown Trout  ranging into the mid twenty inch range also roam the waters of this abundant fishery.  These savvy Browns will take dries and become aggressive  in the fall where they can fall victim to a well placed streamer.  The Missouri is truly an incredible fishery.  It offers anglers beautiful scenery and a variety of challenges from deep water nymphing, streamer fishing, terrestrials and sight fishing to  rising fish.

What to BringAn extremely over used statement in Montana, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute,” unfortunately it is spot on, so we’ll continue to use it.  When planning a trip to Montana, whether in August or November, always packs for the elements.

  1. Breathable waders
  2. Wading boots
  3. Rain gear
  4. Polarized sunglasses
  5. Hat
  6. Sunscreen
  7. Wicking under layer (cotton kills…pack poly pro. Or wool blend for an under layer.)
  8. Windproof shell
  9. Warm socks (avoid cotton during spring and fall months)
  10. Wading sandals(summer)
  11. Stocking cap,
  12. Wool/fleece gloves
  13. Wading Sandals

Rods / Fishing Gear
This is a very common question with guests and never a debate amongst guides. A five weight rod is required to fish the Missouri.  Missouri fish are strong and do their best to break you off or get into your backing with each run.    I have seen many an angler get beat up by an 18’ rainbow with a 3 weight rod.  The fish can be landed on a 3 or 4 weight but usually don’t make the return trip back into the pool due to sheer exhaustion.  The wind can also blow and not always at your back.  This point can’t be stressed enough, don’t ruin a great trip by being under gunned and not be able to punch a cast into the wind because your 5 weight is sitting safely in the rack at home.
