Gear Recommendations
Flies: Bonefish flies should be made up mostly of size 8, and even some 10's. Remember Gamakatsu hooks are sized larger so in those you need a size 10-12. Bonefish Scampi, Gotchas, Bunny Gotchas, Bonefish Bitters, Crazy Charlies, Turneffe Crabs and Turneffe Shrimp are all good choices in a variety of colors. Permit flies should be made of spawning shrimp and smaller crab patterns such as the EP Spawning Shrimp, San Pedro Crab, Something Suspicious, and other EP crabs and shrimp. Tarpon/Snook/Jack flies include blue/white deceivers, EP Tarpon Streamers, Cochroaches, Peanut Butters, Tarpon Toads in a variety of colors.
Rods: Bring 6-12 weight rods. 6-8 weight rods for the Bonefish. 8-9 weight rods for Permit. 10-12 weight rods for Tarpon, Snook, and Jacks (Migratory Tarpon and large Snooks are around).
Lines: Floating lines for Bonefish and Permit are great, sometimes overlined by one weight for wind. Intermediate lines for 10-12 weight rods.
Tippet/Leader: 8 lb test is about the maximum for Bonefish leaders here. 10-14lb test tapered leaders for Permit. For Tarpon/Snook/Jacks 60-80 lb shock tippet Bimini Twist leaders.
Stories from our Trips to San Pedro, Belize
March 2009
We had a great trip this March to San Pedro, Belize. There was plenty of blue skies and warm weather...alot of wind but not everything can go perfect. Ambergris Caye offers a wide selections of opportunities, and we had shots at Tarpon, Snook, Permit, Cudas, Snappers, Jack Crevalle, and hundreds of Bonefish. All thirteen people on the trip caught lots of Bonefish here, although not as large of Bonefish as other destinations, they are plentiful. There was actually a decent amount of shots at Permit although not many eats, we landed a few. There were also a few Tarpon, Jacks, Cudas, and others landed on this trip.
We stayed at the Tides hotel and with the help of Belize Flats Fishing Expeditions everything was ready for us. The staff did a great job making sure everyone got what they needed. They had good guides and even got all of the guys who came along with no experience on fish the whole trip. This is a great place for someones first Saltwater fly fishing experience. It is also a great place to chase a slam, and if I could cast I would have had one.
The town is fun as well with lots of night life and some great seafood restaurants. We ate at places like the Bluewater grill, Caramba's, the Reef, Fido's, Elvies Kitchen, Jambel's Jerk Pit, and a few others which we all enjoyed. There are also lots of dance clubs and pubs to go to afterwards, which we experienced.

We used our friend Doug Brady's company called "Fly Treks" for our trip to Belize. We will be using him for our trips there in the future. Let us know if you would like to contact Doug to book a trip to Belize in the future. Doug has been great to work with, is an excellent fisherman himself, and has focused his business on creating fly fishing trips that are affordable, yet offer top notch guides and service.
