Managed to get away for a day yesterday and hit the Thompson again. I fished the lower river, using nothing a tandem rig of a chubby chernobyl followed up by a Rainy's Grand Hopper (Peach). It wasn't fast and furious, but I really wanted some top water action so I stuck with it. I did change rigs once to sight fish to the biggest rainbow I have seen in the river (estimated 20+ inchs 3-5 lbs) and I put some good drifts in to him, but no grabs. Managed to land a few bows and browns, and a good amount of healthy smallish cutties. The best fishing came at the end of the day while fishing the confluence with the Clark Fork.
The river is in full on summer mode and super good wading. Fish were holding in faster water then previous trips, so fish the long riffles/deeper runs. Anywhere with good food delivery and larger then average cobble bottoms should produce steady fishing.
I had a report of a 30 + brown day from one of our local anglers who fished the upper section of the river. Black Gnats was the food of choice for the upper river browns, which ranged in size from 10-15 inches. Sounds like a good place for a new 3wt to get a healthy workout!
