Sun River - October 23rd, 2011

- Fishing: Great
I spent the last two nights fishing on the Sun close to Great Falls. The browns have made their way up the tribs and higher up the main stem to take care of business. Not having the time to get to far out of town to fish, I have concentrated my efforts on the less productive froggier water down low. With that being said, dozens of hungry rainbows came to hand on streamers of varying colors and sizes. Olive seamed to be the best especially in the sculpin form. Cast, wait, swing, and twitch methods worked the best. Try sink tips, or attach sinking poly leaders to your fly line. We carry these such leaders in floating, intermeadiate, and dredging forms. Lots of fish are eager to eat nymphs and emergers such as pts, crust nymphs, csc emeregers, flash backs, a variety if bwo nymphs, emergers, cripples, duns, and of course eggs and bacon. The whitefish are super soaking the water with little creamy orange eggs, and any trout should be happy to snack on them. Please do not fish over any spawning fish you may stumble across. Let them do there thing for a couple months so more people can have tight lines come mid winter. Happy fishing, and hope to see you enjoying the last of this beautiful weather.

Sun River - June 2nd, 2010
- Recorded:
- 56 ° F
- Fishing: Good
Fishing was pretty good up high on the sun. John T. and I arrived at Gibson Dam right around 8 in the morning and the 15 or 16 inch rainbows were biting pretty good on little stone imitations (tungsten yellow sally). The water is low, but there is still some great nymphing riffles and deep pools you could try some streamers in. Cool temps with some rain, but it didn't keep 'em from biting.
Sun River - May 31st, 2010
- Recorded:
- 65 ° F
- Fishing: Good
The river is running low and clear. The upper stretches are fishing well with nymphs and streamers. Didn't see many hatch activity as of yet. We floated 26 miles from below the diversion to Augusta last night and pulled out at midnight. I don't recommend this to anyone although it is doable. There is some diversion dams where a portage is necessary and the water levels vary largely on different sections due to the dams. Although we saw fish throughout the river so any wade fishing opportunity should be great.
