Big Hole River - April 10th, 2011
  • Recorded:
  • Partly cloudy
  • 42 ° F
  • Fishing: Great
Floated the Big Hole from Brown's to Glen with Christie, our friend Paul Bloch and his girlfriend Leah... Brian and his friend right in front of us we had a crew on the Big Hole this weekend.  Nymphing skwala nymphs, baetis nymphs, and worms was very good.  However, we did much better with natural colors.  Realistic baetis and stone nymphs, as well as the more muted and realistic worms colors seemed to hook more fish (the jig worm which was tied mid float seemed to rally).  Caught some nicer fish on streamers... Coffee's sparkle Minnow and the skiddish both worked well... try Keller's new Late Night with Wanda streamer for something new in the white for a similar color option.  Brian was on the same float but threw streamers all the way to Notch with a few fish as well but said nymphing would have been more productive possibly but he did land the largest fish.  Only a very few Skwala dries were spotted... committed to the dries for about an hour with only a few eats but it's on the verge of being very good.  The water was in perfect condition with lots of visibility and "tea" colored.  If the water stays in good shape their could be a great skwala hatch to catch in the days to come.

Big Hole River - June 1st, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Scattered showers
  • 60 ° F
  • Fishing: Good
Fished the Big Hole over the weekend and had some success.  Friday we floated Salmonfly to Glen and the fishing was great.  The water was up a little bit from recent rains but it didn't really hurt the fishing too much.  The streamer fishing was really good, so we didn't feel the need to nymph.  I boated a 22" brown the 3rd cast after putting in.  I'm sure a yuk bug/SJW combo would've killed um too.  It rained all day Friday, ultimately causing the river to jump over 1000cfs overnight, which made for a little more difficult fishing on Saturday.  Saturday we floated Maiden to Browns bridge and boated a half dozen or so fish and moved a few more.  There were no sign of the big orange bugs yet, but my guess is that they're 6-8 days out.  Once the Big Hole stabilizes and drops it'll fish big.

Streamers: JJ's, yellow yummies, Coffee's sparkle minnow, white sex dungeons, space invaders, brown/yellow double screamers

Nymphs: Yuk bugs, Pats RL, big princes, red SJW, thurminator stone, H's rock n' roll stone, RL stones, red copper john

Dries: few and far between right now but look for Salmon flies, goldens, sallies, caddis, and drakes soon

Big Hole River - March 22nd, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Windy
  • 55 ° F
  • Fishing: Great
Fished the Big Hole both days this weekend from Salmonfly to Notch Bottom.  Nymphed really well with stonefly nymphs.  Thought "the worm" would be the big producer and it worked but not as well as stonefly nymphs...especially a purple prince nymph.  The eggs and bacon fly also gave up some big fish.  Lots of Brown and Rainbows averaging 16" and 2 over the 20" mark.  A few fish caught on streamers but no Skwala action down there yet, it is still in the teens at night which makes it pretty cold in the morning.

Big Hole River - March 19th, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Mostly cloudy
  • 45 ° F
  • Fishing: Good

Fished the Big Hole in search of some early Skwala action to avoid the crowds on the Bitterroot.  Didn't see any Skwala's yet but probably fished too high on the river... fishing was great with the Big Hole standby "Terd and a Worm" (aka Pat's Rubberlegs followed by a San Juan Worm).  Lots of Rocky Mountain Bone.
