Belt Creek - August 23rd, 2011
  • Recorded:
  • Sunny
  • 85 ° F
  • Fishing: Great
Belt has been fishing pretty good through out the last couple weeks. Just like anything its going to slow down the hot part of the day. Caddis, Stimi's, Hoppers, Purple Hazes and PMX's are good ammo for dries. Ants, Hoppers, and Spruce Moths are out. The water looks really good but nymphing has been slower. Copper Johns, Fly Formaly Know as Prince, Hares Ear Soft Hackles and MT Mouthwashes will be a good wet fly selection. This time of year it turns a big recreation spot that the evenings are going to be fishing best.

Belt has come around.... The water is perfect. It might be too low to row down right now but the fishing has been outstanding. A lot of bug life all around. I have mainly thrown dries (Golden Chubbies, Bitterroot Trude, Purple Haze and Morrishes Salmon) but on the rainy nights we have thrown MT Mouthwashes and caught fish. I noticed the drop in water Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I think it is on the verge of being too low to get a boat down now.

Sluice boxes are still closed at the moment due to high water levels and potential log jams in the canyon but the fishing from Riceville bridge to Armington Junction is pretty good.  Water levels are coming down and it’s also clearing up with nymph fishing producing the best results. Fishing a Golden stone (Size# 6-8-10) or a salmon fly (Size# 4-8) with a caddis pupa or lightening bug dropper in the soft water and back eddies.
Please use extreme caution when floating Belt creek, high water this year has changed the structure of the river and added many new trees, log-jams and side channels.
Recommended flys:
Hogan’s rock n roller -Salmonfly (size # 6-8)
Morrish W.M.D.-Golden (size # 6-10)

Silvey’s bead head Pupa (size # 14-16)
Hogan’s Yuba Pupa (size # 14-16)
Lighting Bug (size # 6-8)
Recommended Gear:

Wednesday night on Belt Creek was what spring fishing is suppose to be. Scotty and Erik were out at around 6pm on one of the nicer evenings we've had yet this year. Water levels are good at the moment but probably won't last long if we get any kind of a warm streak.
Rainbow's were caught on a number of bugs:
     20-incher stonefly nymph size 8
Olive beaded softhackle (self tied) size 16
     Pheasant Tail size 14
Olive woolly bugger size 8-12 (The trees/bushes got all but 1)
One thing that was impressive was the size of the Rainbows. We hooked one that came to the surface one time before just sitting in 2ft of water and decided he wasn't going to come to shore and spit the fly after a gruling 5min debate!

Justin and Sam went on a short walkabout yesterday evening on the open stretch of Belt Creek.  The creek is running perfectly clear below Riceville Bridge.  Justin got out his seine and went to work identifiying lots of Salmonfly nymphs, Golden Stone nymphs, Skwala's, March Browns, Baetis, Yellow Sally's, Caddis, Sculpin, and more... the aquatic life looks good for this year and it looks like when those things decide to make the rock climb and hatch it might be a good one this year.  We didn't fish very hard or long so there is not much to report other than a dink and then Justin had a good tug.  We did spot some nice fish in some deeper water.  Pray for no log jams in the canyon this year!

Belt Creek - November 23rd, 2010

It's negative 11!  Crazy unheard of hatch that no one ever sees because it needs to get this cold for them to come out and hatch?... no I don't think so.  Double Diamond or Brew Pub are better choices today.  Showdown opens Dec. 10th but it will have to warm up a bit even for skiing.  Stay warm this weekend and Happy Thanksgiving from the Big R Fly Shop.  Remember... everything in the store will be 15% off the day after.
