Fishing Reports

- Fishing: Great
Fishing on the Missouri was pretty good this weekend. Although we heard lots of good reports about the midge fishing I think the wind blew any chance of clusters forming and so we stuck to the nymph game most of the day. Fished Zebra Midges, Tailwater Charlies, Hot Head shtuff, and other winter/early spring producers and had pretty consistent fishing throughout the day. Reports were also good down in the canyon on streamers but our results weren't as good with streamers above Craig. A few more warm days though and we should be in business on the streamer game.
Lake Pend Oreille - February 8th, 2013
- Recorded:
- 39 ° F
- Fishing: Good
Fishing has been good lately on Lake Pend Oreille. Water temps are in the upper 30's to low 40's depending on where you are in the lake. Flies are working well on top, Black/White, Lavender/White, and White have been working well. The Kootenay Lake Derby is kicking off this weekend and fishing up there has been very good as well. Good Luck out there and remember the new regulation changes for the rainbows.
Okanogan River - February 7th, 2013
- Recorded:
- 39 ° F
- Fishing: Great
On the Okanogan River yesterday and the flow is just rite. The steelhead are moving in again out of the Wells pooI. I spent 3 hours on the water Tuesday and had a danndy good time playing with two of the finest wild metalheads I've had in a long time. The weather calls for early morning fog and clear, cool afternoons in the low 40's.

Fishing is pretty good on the Missouri. I used the 2 hander for half of the day, nymphed for the other half. While on the spey, I had the best luck using Polar Express variants (some white, some green, some with a rabbit tail) on the swing. Some Fire Bead Rays and Rainbow Czech's under an indicator were the best while nymping. Search out the slower water and you'll find fishy spots.
The wind was very steady for most of the day, but at about 4pm the wind quit everything was calm. The midges were hatching and fish were rising. A great end to the day! More calm days are in the forcast... NOAA's website says Friday will be "Mostly sunny, with a high near 41. West southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm". Calm is nice. Get out and fish.
Flows are slowly rising and sitting at about 4500 cfs while water temps are slightly above 35 degrees.

January 9th was the day to go fishing this week. 50 degrees in January.
Hooked a nice brown on the first swing with a pearl Polar Express Minnow. Matt followed me up and hooked a rainbow on his darker rabbit backed Polar Express. We caught fish all day on the swing. It was never red hot, but just right.
We only nymphed a few spots for a short time. A size 18 soft hackle sow bug was money. I like nyphing. There, I said it. I just like swinging with a switch or spey rod more. We caught enough fish and enjoyed the day. Its a snow storm now.

The New Year is off to a great start in fishing terms. An intrepid crew from Big R spent some quality time plying the water below Holter Dam yesterday to fish in 2013.
I was more than happy with the reception the fish provided. Despite water temps of 34.5 degrees and freezing guides, most anglers were able to hook up.
Most of the crew was eager to swing flies and everyone got some taps and tugs. Sometimes its more about casting than catching, though some fish were landed on the 2-Handers. Rob Patton broke out his brand new spey rod and after a quick lesson on the double spey, he had a nice rainbow to hand. Sometimes it’s that easy.
The deadly method for hooking fish in the winter is nymphing with a light leader and small shot. Drifting an egg and a pink soft hackle provided steady action. The takes are often very subtle and if you are paying attention, you can anticipate the bite. If the indicator even stalls, it is worth a check set. Sometimes by the time it moves, it is too late.
Fishing in the cold is not for everyone, but as we walked back to the Bull Pasture parking lot I was plenty warm and happy. Then we fired up the grill and ate into the sunset. Several more fish were even pulled from the parking hole between Brats and cold beers.
Its going to be a great year.
